In some churches, membership is no more than a formality: simply sign a form or attend a meeting and you’re in. At St. Mark’s, membership signifies an individual’s personal commitment to growth as a developing follower of Jesus Christ and participation in the life and mission of the church. We call this type of commitment “Participating Membership”.
The Membership Journey
Step 1 – Membership Class: The membership journey begins with each individual attending a three- session class (one hour each) designed to be both informative and relational. The class assists you in discovering the history, vision and mission of St. Mark’s while connecting you to other attendees and members.
Step 2 – Membership “Connection” Dinner: The dinner is an event created to introduce you to the pastoral staff and other leaders who serve at St. Mark’s. With great food, music and other creative surprises, the dinner serves to make the “big” church feel just a little smaller.
Step 3 – Membership Weekend: Membership is a step not everyone is ready to take at the conclusion of the class and dinner. That’s why the process is designed to allow each person the freedom to investigate membership without the pressure of feeling as though they’ve already made the commitment.
For those choosing to become a member of St. Mark’s, the process concludes at our membership weekend. Each participant is given the option to choose one of our three weekend services to be recognized as a new member.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to say anything!
Beyond Membership
Over the years we’ve discovered that becoming a member doesn’t mean that a person feels like they’re connected to the community at St. Mark’s. For most, the membership class is a person’s initial step in saying “Help me connect.”
As a follow-up, each new member is directed toward other connecting opportunities (Small Groups, Bible Studies, Network-Spiritual Gifts Workshop, Serving) where they can build and strengthen new and existing relationships, discover their place of meaningful service, and grow as a full developing follower of Jesus Christ.
